[Video] Soil Carbon Cycling Throughout the Season

Carbon sequestration and carbon markets are the latest buzz in agriculture, and yet carbon is not an inert substance that goes in the ground and just stays there. It’s actually part of the carbon cycle and involves the entire soil microbial community, decomposition and nutrient uptake.

In this session, University of Minnesota extension educator Jodi DeJong-Hughes explains soil carbon, how it persists in agricultural fields and what the long-term impact is for farmers interested in getting involved in the carbon marketplace. She also discusses recent research looking at the realistic potential of our soils to capture carbon.
