Elk Point, S.D., custom strip-tiller Joey Hanson has helped farmers achieve strip-till success across 100,000 acres on both sides of the Missouri River. His trial-and-error approach yielded many conclusions about the optimal equipment and tools for various conditions. Hanson’s experience with finding the correct coulter type in wet soils serves as just one example.
“About 90% of my failures have come from wavy coulters. I’ll normally run coulters 4-5 inches deep, but with the wavy coulter, I ran it an inch and debated taking it off because it was plugging so much,” he says. “I also tried a smooth coulter during a wet fall a few years ago, and I didn’t find any performance difference from the fluted coulters. I rarely ever plugged the fluted coulter, so that is my go-to coulter of choice.” During this equipment-focused classroom, Hanson shares more insights on which toolbar setups and attachments work best in different soil types, crop residues and conditions.
