Wes Arseneau, a young farmer from Iroquois County, Ill., convinced his dad and late grandfather that strip-till — not conventional tillage — was the way to go after a frustratingly wet 2018 spring. He bought an 8-row toolbar at a local auction and hasn’t looked back, expanding his strip-till acreage every year since.
“I was conditioned to believe you couldn’t strip-till unless you had good drainage,” he says. “Everyone told me that. I went along with it for a long time until I learned you don’t have to have the perfect soils to make strip-till work. In our experience, it works even better in the marginal stuff.” Arseneau dives into how strip-till and cover crops improve drainage and the chain effect both have on yields, nutrient uptake and soil health.
