Encouraged by his daughters to focus more on soil health, Harmon Wilts eventually identified strip-till as a system that could potentially achieve his goal of keeping the family farm economically and environmentally sustainable for future generations. But first, he had to make sure it would work on his heavy, hard black soils in Kerkhoven, Minn.
Wilts launched a multi-year plan in 2019 to try strip-till on different fields and crops while running side-by-side comparisons with conventional tillage to ensure the numbers penciled out. Today, Wilts strip-tills nearly all his corn, soybean and sugar beet acres in 22-inch rows, while also raising beef cattle. In this session, he shares key takeaways from recent trials, details how he manages corn-on-corn acres with multiple fall strip-till passes and discusses the overall experience of adopting strip-till in a cold climate.
