"In the strips, we will variable-rate our P and K. If it doesn’t get fit in the spring, we can plant right on top of that strip, but I like to come back in the spring and add some AMS and some micros in that same strip before we plant on it," Brad Weaver says.
Some conventional peanut production systems may require as many as nine tillage operations, notes Baldwin. A strip-till system, on the other hand, requires only one to two operations.
Robb Ewoldt relies on what he calls “the trifecta” to boost yields while improving soil and water quality at the same time. The trifecta includes nutrients (timing and placement), equipment (technology to cut down on fertilizers) and cover crop/edge of field conservation practices.
