Whether directly or indirectly, strip-tillers often subscribe to the 4R philosophy of nutrient stewardship within their system. Right source, right rate, right time and right place are cornerstones of conservation tillage.
But adoption of these strategies is only one part of the equation, says strip-tiller David Myerholtz, from Gibsonburg, Ohio. Farming in an area that directly drains into the Western Lake Eerie Basin, he is an advocate for improving public awareness of proactive and responsible nutrient management practices.
Cover crops, split nitrogen applications and variable-rate fertilizing are some of the ways he’s helping reduce runoff and erosion on his 1,500 acre corn, soybean and wheat operation.
In today’s Strip-Till Farmer podcast, brought to you by Blu-Jet, we welcome David to discuss his experience and evolution developing a comprehensive fertility program based on the four cornerstones of nutrient management in strip-till.
The Strip-Till Farmer podcast is brought to you by Thurston Manufacturing.
For more than four decades, Thurston Manufacturing has been an innovator in fertilizer injection and conservation tillage equipment. Over that time, large-acre farmers have found “Blu-Jet” to be synonymous with durability, low maintenance and return on investment. A founding Title Sponsor of the National Strip-Tillage Conference, Blu-Jet’s Strip-Tracker was the first strip-till implement to combine on-board fertilizer carrying capacities with a stretched and staggered row unit.
