Farmer Showcases Strip-Till Equipment for Pumpkins

The fifth-generation farmer — and longtime no-tiller — from Cherry Hill Farm checks in from Piedmont, N.C., with a look at how he’s using a KMC strip-till rig to boost his pumpkin production. “The science is pointing to crops benefitting from tillage, not necessarily heavy tillage, but some ripping and some strip-tilling seem to be effective yield boosters,” he says.

Farmer Seeks Advice on Strip-Till Setups

Here’s another good conversation we came across in the Strip-Till Community Forum on Facebook. Cody, who’s thinking about getting into strip-till, had a big question for the group. “Has anybody built their own (rig) where they were (able) to put dry fertilizer in the row as well, or would it be better with liquid?” Several strip-tillers responded with their insights, including Chris Bertrand, who says there’s a lot to consider. “Are you running knife or coulter machine? Are you spring or fall? And what is available in your area for product?”

Improving the soil while maintaining a profit is a simple philosophy that's reflected in Cavan, Ont., farmer Norm Lamothe's approach to nitrogen (N) management and cover crops. On this episode of Farming Forward, Lamothe shares how he's combining cover crops and the power of living roots with a split N strategy to improve soil health and boost efficiency.
