With harvest underway in 12 of the top 18 corn-growing states, we asked growers in the No-Till Farmer Email Discussion Group — what were the biggest weed issues you encountered this year and how did you handle them?

Ryan Damery, Mt. Zion, Ill.

Waterhemp and pigweed are the biggest weed issues in our area. Delaying burndown as long as I can (Roundup, 2,4-D and Zidua Pro), followed with Enlist One, Liberty post and planting green, worked pretty well in my area. Post 22 GPA carrier, lots of AMS (3 pounds per acre) and strong rates (40 oz Liberty) are really helping. I switched from a TTI (Turbo TeeJet Induction) to a large nozzle AIXR (Air Induction Extended Range) and it really helped kill the waterhemp hiding under canopy.

John Beatty, Butler, Pa.

Our area has experienced a huge amount of rainfall this year and we’ve had a sudden explosion of foxtail. Only Perimeter (herbicide) in corn as it’s so tall and thick this year but had to spray beans just prior to flowering. Not the best timing, but that miserable stuff will choke everything — including a combine!

Keith Lovrien, Clarksville, Iowa

Waterhemp throughout the fields, but mild, and giant ragweed in borders, fencelines and terraces. Interesting that I had giant ragweed in fencelines and terraces that had been clean. We were getting out of drought conditions this spring, must’ve contributed to the flush. We waited (for burndown) as long as possible. Authority Supreme worked well for my pre. Enlist and Liberty plus Dual post.
