Farmers Discuss Benefits, Challenges of Twin-Row Strip-Till

Kevin Ikemire sparked a good conversation in the Strip-Till Community Forum on Facebook with a question about twin-row strip-till. “Has anyone tried twin rows and strip-till? I’m thinking the problem is the rows are right on the edge of the strip and doesn’t leave much room for error on steering. Not so much worried about the nutrient side but would like to be planting on a clean strip,” Kevin says. Ryan George responded, saying twin-row strip-till has worked well for his soybeans. “We’re doing it for beans,” he says. “Works pretty well. We’re adding implement guidance this fall on the strip-till bar to improve.”

Making the ‘Business’ Case for Strip-Till

Implementing conservation practices like strip-till and cover crops from a business perspective is the mission of Precision Conservation Management, a program created by the Illinois Corn Growers Association. Benjamin Herrold dives into the program and some of the data collected recently from various trials. “Excessive tillage is costly,” says Gary Schnitkey, Univ. of Illinois ag economist. “We very rarely see two-, three-pass tillage systems being economical. However, if you look at no-till versus a one-pass system, or any of the tillage systems for that matter, tillage does seem to have a yield advantage…the added yield often does not cover the cost of the tillage pass.”
