It's time now for our Video of the Week. Strip-Till Innovator Melissa Shaw from SKS Farm gives us an up-close look at a custom-built interseeder that she and her husband Ryan use to plant all their cover crops in Marlette, Mich.

“Here we have our interseeder, and it really plants all of our cover crops in between our planting zones. So, in our no-till zones is where we put all of our cover crops. This used to be a Hiniker cultivator, and we stripped it down to just the bar. Bought the Dawn DuoSeed row units, which we found from a guy at the Strip-Till Conference. We’ve got the Salford tank too. We’ve learned a lot with this. We interseed all of our corn, so we do that at V3-V5, usually a bit earlier now, and we’ll put all of our cover crops — mainly cereal rye or whatever kind of blends we have in the fall — down with this too usually following the combine. It’s been really interesting doing it that way because we can have those cover crops there and not have to worry about how big they get and terminating them unless it’s corn and we’re short on moisture. Having the cover crop strips between our planting zones, we don’t have to worry, make our strips and keep letting it stay green. Especially with sugar beets it’s nice to have that wind break for as long as we can. It provides a really nice atmosphere for our little seedlings.”
