Optimal nutrient placement is the top benefit of strip-till in the eyes of Chris Kasten, data analyst for TEVA Corporation. Kasten says determining optimal nutrient rates for the crop comes down to 3 basic steps
Plant tissue analysis is a singular tool within the toolbox that can be used to help assess nutrient deficiencies within fields. There are a few things to consider when you're taking plant tissue samples.
The new soil health assessment package uses the same biological and nitrogen evaluations as other soil health analyses, but is modified to evaluate nutrients using extractants widely accepted, correlated and calibrated to crop response.

Soil gets tired. After years of supporting a rotating cast of crops, the soil’s nutrient supply is often exhausted. The tilling, turning, and planting also degrade the organic matter in the soil and its ability to stay hydrated.
Recent surveys indicate that 20% of the fields in Pennsylvania do not have a current soil test. With high yields, the plant food contained in the soil is depleted more rapidly. A 200-bushel corn crop pulls out 80 pounds of phosphorus and 60 pounds of potassium. It is important to get a benchmark as to what is left.
Many producers could benefit by using starter fertilizer when planting corn. Starter fertilizer is simply the placement of some fertilizer, usually nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), near the seed - which "jump starts" growth in the spring.

The keys to maximizing the economic returns from phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilizer applications are a comprehensive soil testing program and maintaining P and K soil test levels above their respective critical levels.
