Jerry and Nancy Ackermann have been strip-tilling corn and no-tilling soybeans and alfalfa on their 1,200-acre farm in southwest Minnesota since 2001. Coming from conventional tillage practices, the transition began on a small 50-acre test plot. The Ackermanns were recognized for their successful efforts to conserve applied fertilizer and minimize runoff and loss as recipients of the Responsible Nutrient Management Practitioners award at the 2016 National No-Tillage Conference.
In 2017, we dropped our starter fertilizer application in the furrow at planting. The past 4 years we purposely ordered short on 10-20 acres so we didn’t carry over any starter to the next year.
