The hemp industry has been booming in the U.S. and has long-term promise as an alternative crop. But hemp is a lot different than traditional row crops and there’s a learning curve when it comes to seeding practices, genetics, harvest methods or dealing with the legal requirements, says Steve Groff.

Much of the current interest in growing hemp revolves around the CBD varieties, with this sector growing the fastest and gaining the most momentum. While it may be tempting to jump in and order some seed or clones, it’s important to consider some of the risks involved in growing a new crop.

With his latest venture, Hemp Innovators, Groff is helping producers navigate the murky waters of the emerging industrial hemp industry, bringing 25 years of experience in cover crop research and deep roots in studying hemp planting to this new arena with his customary intelligence and common sense.

The Holtwood, Pa., no-tiller will share his experiences raising hemp for the CBD market and provide attendees with an understanding of what’s required to enter into this market, the equipment and fertility requirements, and what mistakes to avoid. He’ll also how cover crops can be incorporated with hemp plants to facilitate soil health and provide nutrients for optimal growth.
