Harvest Ride-Along: Strip-Tiller Happy with Yields on Stubborn Soils

Jon Stevens takes us along for the ride as he harvests corn-on-corn in Rock Creek, Minn. Stevens keeps the camera locked on his Ag Leader Yield Monitor as he breaks the 260-bushel barrier. “Nobody recognizes east central Minnesota for growing good crops,” Stevens says. “On forums, I’ve read where people come over here to laugh at us and how we do stuff. And here I’m growing (260-bushel) corn on a field that hasn’t been tilled in a number of years. For our area to have a monitor sitting like that, I’m proud. Let’s say blessed. God has very much blessed this field.”

On-Farm Research Yields Results for Alabama Strip-Tillers

Alabama strip-tiller Chad Henderson and his family have won multiple NCGA Yield Contest plaques. But Chad is motivated by much more than awards and recognition. “Awards come from research,” he says in this Alabama Farmers feature. “They just help pave the way for our research and development. Then, we breed that into normal farming practices. Everyone thinks you need more fertilizer, more seed to raise yields. When you understand stress mitigation, then you open a lot of avenues.”

Navigating Poor Fall Conditions for Strip-Till

Peter Strohmeier shared a challenge he’s dealing with in the Strip-Till Community Forum on Facebook. “It’s almost impossible to clear the straw from the strip. Has anyone had similar experiences? I only see photos of perfect strips.” Some of the comments encouraged Peter to wait until it’s dry or call an audible and make strips in the spring.

Strip-Till Lessons Learned from the Northern Plains

On this episode of Soil School, Strip-Till Farmer Hall of Famer Jodi DeJong-Hughes shares some of her top observations from decades of strip-till research at the Univ. of Minnesota Extension. DeJong-Hughes discusses some of the challenges farmers face when switching to strip-till, and examines nutrient management strategies, fall vs. spring strip-till and more!

Strip-Till Liquid vs. Dry Fertilizer

Jason Webster, Precision Planting PTI Farm Manager and former National Strip-Tillage Conference keynote speaker, breaks down liquid vs. dry fertilizer in this InsidePTI segment and details some of the ongoing strip-till trials at the research farm.
