Farmer Frustrated with Strip-Till, Seeks Advice
The path to strip-till success isn't always 100% smooth. Christopher Carlson voiced his frustrations in the Strip-Till Community Forum on Facebook. “The past 2 years I’ve dabbled with strip-till. Think I’m done. Late season standability of corn is horrible,” he writes. “It’s always my worst standing corn. July 1, it always looks the best and has the best stand. But by harvest, it’s always lodged worse than no-till, minimum-till or the few farms we do full tillage. All strip-till has been done in the fall with dry conditions. One other issue we run into is staying off the soft strip while spraying. Anyone else experience these pitfalls?” Several strip-tillers responded with advice for Christopher and shared suggestions on key adjustments he can make to reap the benefits of strip-till. Keaton Funk said this — “We’ve strip-tilled for 8 years or so and our corn stood perfectly fine for the most part in a derecho with 90-100 mph winds. I don’t think strip-till is the problem especially if it’s only been 2 years that you’ve done it. Strip-till takes time to change your soil structure. It doesn’t happen automatically.”
Fall Strip-Till Insights from Ken Ferrie
Ken Ferrie’s latest Boots in the Field Report focuses on fall tillage systems, including strip-till, vertical tillage and no-till. Ferrie says farmers are having success with fall strips in lighter soils, but it’s a different story in clay-loam soils. “If you’re running a strip freshener next spring, much of this problem can be corrected, but only if you’re running that freshener before these large clods become dried clods in the spring,” he says.
Fall vs. Spring Strip-Till at Precision Planting’s PTI Farm
Here’s a video from a couple years ago that popped up on my timeline this morning. Jason Webster checks in from Precision Planting’s PTI Farm in Pontiac, Ill., with some key takeaways from research trials comparing fall and spring strip-till.
Strip-Tillers Shine Light on Busy Post-Harvest Plans
Harvest is in the rearview mirror for Stuart Sanderson (Madison, Ala.) and Ethan Zoerb (Litchfield, Neb.), but there’ still plenty to do before winter. The strip-tillers reflect on the 2025 growing season and discuss their upcoming strip-till and vertical tillage plans in this Progressive Farmer “View from the Cab” feature.
Proving the Benefits of Strip-Till with On-Farm Research
Kyle Meece (@MeeceUPAgronomy) posted this drone shot on X of a side-by-side strip-till trial on his Monticello, Ill., farm. Meece gjves a shoutout to Steers Farms and Patrick Olson for making his fall strips and setting the table for a successful 2026!
Thanks to @steers_farms and @PatrickWOlson for getting some strips put in for us this fall. Weather has been great to get field work done so wanted to get some side by side data on our own farm with strip till vs 870. One of the many trials gearing up to implement for 2026! pic.twitter.com/iUElZr04z5
