Finding Success with Strip-Till & Cereal Rye

Mott Moeller shared in the Strip-Till Community Forum on Facebook that he’s thinking about making strips through cereal rye for corn next year. “Has anyone done this with success?” he asked the group. Judging by the comments, it looks like many strip-tillers have found the winning formula. “I broadcast rye and then make strips before the seed germinates,” says Westin Arseneau. “The strip-till moves most of the seed to between the strips and throws enough dirt to get the seed to germinate (rain after always helps). In the spring, I have nice clean strips with cover crops between them.”

Strip-Tiller Slashes Inputs with Cover Crops & More

Brownfield Ag goes 1-on-1 with northern Illinois strip-tiller Jay Whalen for a conversation about his conservation practices. Whalen says his strip-till system is producing higher yields with fewer inputs. “I’ve had a goal of getting down to a half pound of nitrogen per bushel of corn,” he says. “This year we finally got that goal. Not using any artificial fertilizers, potash, MAP or DAP for the last 2 years and still increasing our corn yields.”

High Yield Contest Winners Share Insights & Strategies

A quartet of Kansas Yield Contest winners talked about their high-yielding practices during the High Plains Journal Live event recently. Alex Noll, who set a state dryland corn yield record in 2024 with 340 bushels per acre, says variable rate fertility has been key to his success. “We started with 2.5-acre grids to establish a benchmark,” he says. “Then we progressed to 1.6 acres, and then 1.1-acre grids. And at this point in time, we’re told that’s the highest refinement we can get out of a piece of equipment that travels across the field, but we are utilizing that on our nitrogen as well. We overlay those with vertical rate planning maps, and we’ve gotten into doing a lot of foliar feeding to compliment it in areas where we have soil deficiencies.”
