How Much Can You Dial Back Fertilizer with Strip-Till?
The answer to the above question is 25-50%, according to a 5-year study at Precision Planting’s PTI Farm. “Since the placement is so efficient right underneath the plant, I can cut rates 25% to 50% without missing a beat yield-wise, and I’m making anywhere from $20 to $30 more on a per acre basis,” says Jason Webster, PTI Farm Manager. Learn more about the study in his interview with Brownfield Ag News.
Strip-Tilling Soybeans in the Winter
2024 Strip-Till Innovator Chris Perkins checks in from Otwell, Ind., with images of strip-tilling and planting soybeans in the snow! “Completely amazed at how good the emergence was after just planting a couple weeks ago,” he says. (This was all in good fun — with AI-generated images — to make light of the fact that this winter has been cold and snowy for most of the Corn Belt and beyond!)
Weather in SW Indiana has been horrible but I’ve been able to keep strip tilling and decided to go ahead and keep planting beans since the weather is so cold to keep them insulated in snow. Dive deeper into David Hula’s 2025 recipe for his NCGA Yield Contest-Winning 572-bushel crop in this Progressive Farmer article. “As long as God blesses me with the ability to learn and share with others, I’ll keep on pushing the envelope,” Hula says.
Seventh-Generation Farmer Details Transition to 100% Strip-Till
In this video from IL Corn, McClean County, Ill., farmer Rob Park shares why he’s transitioning to 100% strip-till next growing season. Park also details his top 6 finish in the national nitrogen management contest.
Plant Disease Experts: 2026 Could be ‘Tar Spot Year’
While Southern rust took its tool across U.S. corn fields in 2025, warmer-than-normal temperatures stifled tar spot, — but the respite seems like an outlier, says Dan Crummett in this No-Till Farmer feature.
