A Look at Strip-Tiller Randy Dowdy’s New Planter
Randy Dowdy checks in from Valdosta, Ga., with a look at his new John Deere ExactEmerge planter. The former soybean yield world record holder also explains how he used strip-till and cover crops ahead of planting season.
Resiliency Steers Strip-Tillers Through Farming Challenges & Health Scares
Here’s a great feature from WallacesFarmer on 2026 Iowa Master Farmers Dan and Susan Voss, who detail the ups and downs of their journey after adopting no-till in 1988, strip-till in 1996 and cover crops in 2011. “Dan was instrumental in our farm’s switch to no-till soybeans,” said J.E. Schanbacher, who farms near Atkins, Iowa. “He also provided information on using no nitrogen on corn following alfalfa. We now routinely utilize this practice, and we feel our yields have not suffered at all.”
Strip-Tillers Keeping an Eye on Surging Fertilizer Prices
Debbie Carlson unpacks some of the challenges farmers face heading into planting season. David Iserman, a fifth-generation strip-tiller from Streator, Ill., says he’s looking at his fertilizer inputs from the standpoint of profit, not yield. “For every dollar I put in, I want to get $1 back. I don't care about winning a yield contest. I care about return,” he says.
Wisconsin Conservation Group Surpasses 37,000 Strip-Till, No-Till Acres
The Lafayette Ag Stewardship Alliance recently gathered for its annual meeting in Darlington, Wis., and revealed results from its 2025 Member Conservation Survey. With 8 years of data, the survey shows the group’s use of various conservation practices, including soil sampling, planting cover crops, utilizing no-till and reduced-till methods, split nitrogen application, low disturbance manure application and planting directly into cover crops, also known as “planting green.” In 2025, Alliance members planted 12,773 acres of cover crops and 37,120 acres using no-till or strip-till.
Switching All Corn & Soybean Acres to 1-Pass Strip-Till
Beaver Dam, Wis., started an interesting conversation on X with a hypothetical scenario in which all corn and soybean acres transitioned to 1-pass strip-till. AI assistant Grok, after crunching the numbers at the request of Monte Bottens, called it a “solid win for conservation.”
Let play out a scenario. What would happen if all acres of corn and beans in USA went to one pass strip til. What industries besides the strip til manufactures would benefit the most and what ones would suffer the most. @bandedagllc @Diversified_Ag pic.twitter.com/7RQ6XKR7aY
