With spring soybean planting just a month and half away for many farmers, the U.S. EPA has released new dicamba usage restrictions for the 2023 growing season that apply only to in-season dicamba use in soybeans.
Localized populations of these species found on headlands or field margins likely represent a new introduction. Populations that are distributed throughout fields are likely a sign that these species have gone undetected for more than one year.
This year, ISU Extension field agronomists, commercial agronomists and other stakeholders in several areas of the state have observed a high percentage of non-dicamba tolerant soybeans showing injury symptoms characteristic of dicamba.
The changes, requested by pesticide registrants in consultation with those states, are intended to reduce risks from the use of over-the-top dicamba, an herbicide used to control certain types of broadleaf weeds.
U.S. EPA administrator Michael Regan is “extremely concerned” about potential dicamba incidents, saying the agency is investigating 2021 injury reports and preparing to take regulatory action if necessary.
The new registration follows Bayers' launch announcement for XtendFlex soybeans and enables full
potential of industry-leading Roundup Ready Xtend Crop System.
