Not only will most of the weeds be too large for effective control but the crops are getting close to or beyond the maximum growth stage. Penn State weed scientist Dwight Lingenfelter shares a few considerations about these factors.
One thing to be aware of this spring is not to have the planter outpace the spraying operation so the crop and weeds get too far ahead. Here are some considerations for both corn and soybean fields from PennState Extension weed scientist Dwight Lingenfelter.
"Killing marestail in the fall is usually easier since the seedlings and rosettes are small and more susceptible to herbicides. Once weeds like marestail get through the winter, their rosettes start to bolt upwards in the spring, making them much more difficult to control," says Dwight Lingenfelter.
The wet weather in some areas has made it difficult for timely herbicide applications, but it can also affect herbicide residual activity and potential crop injury issues.
Before burndown herbicide programs are considered, it is best to know what weeds you are targeting to best determine what products to use and when to apply them for optimum performance, says Penn State University Extension.
Various factors can greatly impact burndown herbicide effectiveness. Below are some considerations when applying burndown herbicides this spring to control weeds and terminate cover crops.
Begin spraying when possible, says Penn State University Extension, as fields with a high density of winter annuals may benefit from the burndown now to conserve soil moisture which is almost always a problem later.
Thoroughly consider the possible reasons for the symptoms before you draw conclusions. Here is a summary of the potential for herbicide injury and the associated symptoms.
In the fall, foliar-applied herbicides can be effective as long as the plants are green and appear healthy. For best activity, apply herbicides when daytime temperatures are above 50°F and nighttime temperatures are above 40°F for several days during application time.
