The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a proposed rule to revoke tolerances for chlorpyrifos, which establish the amount of a pesticide that is allowed on food.
The EPA revoked all food tolerances for chlorpyrifos insecticide (Lorsban and Warhawk), meaning farmers may no longer apply pesticides containing the chemical on crops grown for food or feed use. But it can still be used in certain situations, as explained by specialists at Iowa State University.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it will once again ban the use on food crops of the pesticide chlorpyrifos, which has been linked to health problems in children, says Reuters.
Though the controversial chemical remains legal to use in the U.S., a handful of states have moved to ban it. Now, a major manufacturer has decided to discontinue manufacturing it in the face of diminishing sales.
