Pamela Smith shares some of the keys to his success in this Progressive Farmer article. “Every year teaches us something. This was the year of the finish. We learned just how important it is to keep those hybrids protected to extend grain fill,” Hula says.

Defining ‘Degenerative Tillage’ & ‘Soil Health Crops’

The great Randall Reeder introduces some new terms to consider in his latest column for Ohio’s Country Journal — soil health crops and degenerative tillage. “Don Reicosky, retired USDA-ARS soil scientists, suggests calling them (cover crops) ‘soil health crops,’ for the way they contribute to improve nutrient cycling and biological activity. How about ‘conventional tillage?’ …I began using ‘degenerative tillage’ as a more accurate term for plowing because it degrades the soil.”

Learning Strip-Till ‘the Hard Way’

Follow along as this young farmer documents his first experience with strip-till on the Anything Goes USA YouTube channel. “By the end, we figured out what worked and what didn’t, and got our strips mellowed out enough to plant corn before cold weather rolled in,” he says. “This is the reality of farming. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and sometimes you learn the hard way.”

Brian Hefty gives his take on the above question in this clip from the Ag PhD podcast!
