A Year in the Life of a Strip-Tiller

Marth Blum from Agrinews takes us behind the scenes with Viola, Ill., strip-tiller Chad Bell throughout the 2026 growing season. Bell, who’s getting ready to plant, talked about the benefits of strip-till in this latest entry. “It is the best of both worlds between no-till and full tillage,” he said. “It maintains residue on the soil surface and the advantage of having a residue-free strip that is warmer and drier to plant into.”

Rookie Strip-Tiller Gets Big Help from Precision Specialist on Planting Day 1

With the arrival of planting season, we’re revisiting this piece from a couple years ago. Follow along as first-time strip-tillers Leo and Patrick Johnson plant corn into strips on their 1,000-acre farm in Clinton, Wis. Their precision specialist comes to the rescue when they run into some problems with the planter.

The Fertilizer Fallacy: Yields Up, Profits Down

“There’s a deeply held belief in modern agriculture that more fertilizer equals more yield, and more yield equals more profit. It sounds reasonable on the surface. But when you sharpen your pencil and run the numbers, the math often tells a very different story. For many farmers, a significant chunk of their fertilizer bill is doing nothing more than padding someone else’s bottom line,” says Brian Doughtery, former National Strip-Tillage Conference speaker. Read more of his piece, “The Fertilizer Fallacy,” on the Understanding Ag website.

Breaking Down the Use of Sugars in Crops

Here’s another thought-provoking piece from another former National Strip-Tillage Conference speaker, Brian Arnall. The Oklahoma State precision nutrient management extension specialist takes a deep dive into the mechanics of soil fertility and the use of sugar in crops.

Strip-Tiller Details Journey with Cover Crops

The great Harmon Wilts from Kerkhoven, Minn., talks about his family’s commitment to strip-till and cover crops in this FarmFutures piece. Wilts will be giving a classroom presentation on his 5-year plan for strip-till success at the 2026 National Strip-Tillage Conference Aug. 6-7 in Springfield, Ill.
