In this Farm Progress Field Check, Ritter says 90% of his soybeans were done by April 10. “The Lord’s blessed us with some good windows,” he says. Ritter is also planning on experimenting with strip-till and cover crops for the first time this planting season.

Key Takeaways from New Strip-Till Sorghum Trial

Agronomist Brendan Burton revealed early findings from a strip-till sorghum trial during a recent field day in Queensland. He said the system had consistently delivered a cleaner, more level seedbed, improving planting depth consistency and seed-soil contact while reducing surface crusting. Results from the 2024-25 summer cropping season showed strip-till increased soil temperatures at planting depth. Using soil probes placed at 2 inches below the soil surface, Burton said soil in strip-tilled areas averaged 1.5° C to 2° C warmer than no-till treatments — a difference that remained consistent from winter through to summer planting. Read more about the trial and a growing interest in strip-till for sorghum in this Groundcover feature.
