An Interesting Way to Manage Residue Ahead of Soybeans
On this episode of RealAgriculture’s Soybean School, Lucknow, Ont., brothers Lawrence Hogan and Steve Howard share how they’re using a modified 16-row residue-clearing unit to create an ideal planting strip for twin-row soybeans while maintaining the benefits of their long-term no-till system.
What’s the Key to Strip-Tilling in 20-Inch Rows?
Timothy Kruithoff has been farming in 20-inch rows for almost 3 decades and would like to switch to strip-till. “We’re looking for advice on strip-tilling 20-inch rows…haven’t found our best options yet,” he says in the Strip-Till Community Forum on Facebook. Anyone have advice for him? Here’s what Andy Thompson says: “My experience strip-tilling on 20-inch rows goes back 15-plus years. At first, I tried to figure out a way to take the same things we were doing in 30-inch rows and making them work on 20-inch rows. Modified it a little and mostly made it work. Then we started to better understand what we were trying to accomplish. Now we do the same thing on 20-inch rows as we would on 30-inch rows. Been strip-tilling 20-inch rows now with the neighbor for 8 years and am very pleased with the results.”
Russell Hedrick’s Approach to ‘Better Farming’
In this episode of The Whole Farm Podcast, Michael Pisciotta and Les Riley sit down with Russell Hedrick, a first-generation farmer from Hickory, N.C., and one of the most progressive young farmers in the country. Russell shares how he got started with cover crops, how he began setting biological baselines on his farm in 2013 and how those practices eventually helped him set a North Carolina soybean record in 2021 and a dryland corn record in 2022 with more than 459 bushels per acre.
RFK Jr., Rick Clark Talk Soil Health, Cover Crops on Podcast
Cover crops and soil health are in the national spotlight on The Secretary Kennedy Podcast this week. Rick Clark shares his journey from conventional farming to regenerative agriculture and explains how cover crops, no-till and rebuilding his soil health have strengthened the resilience of his Williamsport, Ind., operation.
Strip-Till, Cover Crops Boost Water Quality for Innovator
Strip-Till Innovator Chris Perkins recently shared this video on his @BandedAgLLC X account, showcasing the impact of strip-till and cover crops after a heavy rainfall. “Very clean water for the amount of rain that came down overnight,” Perkins says. “Definitely even more impressed with this program.”
