The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $10 million in a new initiative to sample, measure and monitor soil carbon on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres to better quantify the climate outcomes of the program. The initiative will begin implementation in fall 2021 with three partners who will conduct soil carbon sampling on three categories of CRP practice types: perennial grasses, trees and wetlands.

Drought conditions change the way farmers should fall-apply nitrogen. Soil retains more nitrogen during a drought, so there could be an opportunity for farmers to spread out or delay input costs to avoid sending excess N downstream.

Amazon on Sept. 2 announced the launch of the Agroforestry and Restoration Accelerator in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, a global environmental organization. The Accelerator will create a more sustainable source of income for thousands of local farmers in the Brazilian Amazonian state of Pará, while also restoring native rainforests and fighting climate change by naturally trapping and storing carbon.
